Study in Russia

KIROV OBLAST (formerly VYATKA PROVINCE), western Russia

The map of the Kirov oblast

Kirov oblast (formerly Vyatka province) covers an area of 46,650 square miles (120,800 square km) and occupies almost the entire basin of the Vyatka River. It is a rolling morainic plain rising from the broad, central valley of the Vyatka to the dissected limestone uplands of the Severnye Hills in the north and the Vyatsky Hills and Verkhne (Upper) Kama upland in the east. Nearly all the oblast lies in swampy forest, or taiga, of pine, fir, spruce, and birch; in the extreme south deciduous species such as oak begin to appear. Floodplain meadows flank the Vyatka river. In the forested areas timber industries are highly developed. There are extensive areas of peat bog and swamp.

Most of the population live in the Vyatka River valley. The Vyatka is a major tributary of the Kama, the Volga's largest tributary. Timber working is a major element in the economy. Iron deposits near Omutninsk, which have been worked since the 18th century, are the base, together with Urals ore, for the oblast's metallurgical industries. Phosphorite is mined at Rudnichny. Much peat is cut for fue.

The climate of Kirov oblast is of the continental type. Winters are cold and long (average January temperature, 14° F [-10° C]); summers are short and mild (average July temperature, 64° F [18° C]). The moderate (23 inches [582 mm]) annual precipitation occurs predominantly in the summer months, often in brief, heavy downpours.

KIROV, formerly (until 1934) VYATKA, or VIATKA, is an old Russian city and the administrative centre of Kirov oblast (formerly Vyatka province). The city's area is 150 square km. The population (1999 est.) is 502,000.

The city is located in western Russia about 986 km northeast of Moscow and 1200 miles (1940 km) east of the Polish border. The city lies in the broad, shallow valley of the Vyatka River, a tributary of the Kama and thus of the Volga.

The city of Kirov has a large concentration of educational institutions, and its centres of higher education draw students from throughout Volga-Vyatka region. The city is one of the most important Russian centres for education. It contains Vyatka Teacher-Training University, Vyatka State Agricultural Academy, Vyatka State University and Kirov State Medical Academy.

The Administration of the city of Kirov

The Administration of the city of Kirov

Currently, Kirov is a major centre of Russian manufactures. The city's once-renowned handicraft industries have been replaced by large-scale, modern industries, particularly production of armaments, metals, nonferrous metalworking, engineering, agricultural machinery, machine tools, electrical and precision engineering, timber-processing industries, including saw milling, pulp making, paper, hard-board, and plywood, tire making, electronics, furniture-making, timber-working equipment, food processing, processing of agricultural products, chemicals, fertilizers, footwear, leatherworking, shoemaking, furs and fur preparation medical supplies, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, various light industries producing linen, lace, and a wide range of other consumer goods.

Modern Kirov is a major junction centre. The city is a focus of rail routes to almost all Russian cities. Kirov is the centre of the country's rail network, on which freight transport is heavily dependent. Trunk rail lines radiate from the city in all directions to major Russian population and industrial centres. Passenger trains connect to destinations throughout Russia. Today, railways radiate from Kirov to Perm, Kotlas, Vologda, and Nizhny Novgorod. Electrified suburban lines serve the metropolitan area.

Kirov is also a major river port. Bus, trolleybus and streetcar are the principal means of local transportation.

Kirov was once the centre of the country's airline network; the Pobedilovo airport, 25 km west, handled national flights. Currently, the flight schedule includes only several «Moscow-Kirov» flights a week.

Abdalla Magdi, a 5-year-student of the Internal Medicine Faculty a 5-year-student of the Internal Medicine Faculty:

I like to study at the Kirov State Medical Academy very much. I like the teachers' attitude to us. They are very kindly, ready to help. When we don't understand the material, they are ready to explain us after the lessons. We also have very good relations with our Dean Razin Maxim P.

Of course, at first it was difficult with the Russian language. Now all the problems with the language are over.

After graduation I want to become a traumatologist. Now I am having practice at the Kirov Traumatology Hospital.

My cousin also wants to come to Kirov to enter the Kirov State Medical Academy.
